To many, putting on that bright orange construction vest and yellow hard hat in the early morning signals the start of work. At Tarion, we recognize each and every day how important that work day is to the lives of so many in the building industry and how it impacts the lives of new home buyers each and every day. That experience can also be an opportunity to share. On June 21st, Tarion sent a team of employees to a Habitat for Humanity build in the Toronto area. Aptly referring to themselves as Team Tarion, they spent the entire day hammering nails, painting walls, and giving back to the community by helping low-income families realize the dream of home ownership and the safety and stability that comes with calling a house a home.
Tarion’s job is to make sure the new home ownership process is working. And we are happy to use our experience so more people in Ontario realize the dream of homeownership.
Tarion has always maintained a culture of giving. Participating in building initiatives like this is one way that we like to give back to the communities that we live and work in ourselves. According to one member of Team Tarion, “After spending the day nail after nail it was very exciting to see the walls go up and try to imagine what the rooms will look like,” she said, “Will they be a bright pink little girl’s room or decked out in The Avengers decals? Will the parents have their own little paradise in the master?”
Tarion’s job is to make sure the new home ownership process is working. And we are happy to use our experience so more people in Ontario realize the dream of homeownership. Through Habitat for Humanity, we can help provide those in need with a home, which makes a long day’s labour very rewarding. As another Team Tarion builder recalled, “The hard work helped me realize how blessed we are to have the jobs and residences we sometimes take for granted.”
“It didn’t seem like work because we were helping some family get a better break in life.”
Tarion’s charitable initiatives go well beyond this one build. Every year, different staff members come together at a site, ready to help out in whatever way possible in order to get the families into their new home. Since 1993, Tarion has also waived over $450,000 in fees for Habitat for Humanity, leading to over 900 new homes across Ontario.
This year’s build turned out to be a success for everyone involved, from Tarion, to the builders, to Habitat for Humanity. However, the biggest success came in the joy of building a home that a family can move into and centre its future around. As Team Tarion members exclaimed, “We had a great crew and it was a ton of fun! Can’t wait until the next one.”
Habitat is just one of the charities that Tarion is proud to support. Corporate social responsibility has been an important part of Tarion’s cultural identity for decades. To find out more about Tarion’s community involvement, have a look at our Corporate Social Responsibility Plan.
