October! Clowns, posers and imposters knocking on your door, lots of spicy sausage and Tarion’s annual survey. Not all at the same time of course. We haven’t intentionally timed our annual Homeowner survey to correspond with Halloween or Oktoberfest. It’s just that we’ve found fall is an excellent time for finding people at home… in their newly constructed home. Each year at this time we reach out to the proud owners of nearly 50,000 new homes across the province and ask questions about how we’re doing and how their builders are doing. Each year we get terrific feedback. So, if you are in a brand new home, join in. Be part of a great tradition and have your thoughts, views and experiences heard. Still on the fence? Come on down! We also reward those who take the time to complete the survey with a chance to win a prize.

Each year at this time we reach out to the proud owners of nearly 50,000 new homes across the province and ask questions about how we’re doing and how their builders are doing.

Sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? A chance to speak up, impact positive change and maybe even win a prize? It’s true! No catch. Even the questions are straight-forward and the survey only takes about 15 minutes. Andy Warhol would approve.

We ask simple but important questions like:

  • How was your builder’s customer service?
  • Did your builder provide information on the statutory new home warranty?
  • Did your builder follow through on his/her commitments?
  • Did your new home have everything you agreed to and signed for? And if not, did your builder listen to your concerns and fix the problems?
  • Did your builder complete repairs and leave the home clean and damage free?
  • Did you have any problems in your home?
  • Would you recommend your builder?

We also ask about your interactions with Tarion. Yes, your opinion really does matter to us! Not only does it help determine if your builder will be recognized with a customer service award, it also helps us make important improvements to Tarion’s services and to the new home buying experience in Ontario.

The survey results also help builders improve their services. If they receive enough responses, builders are provided with individual reports that compare their results to the average (without identifying the participants, of course!). We meet with builders to help explain and analyze their scores and offer advice on improving customer service. So, if your new home buying experience did not meet your expectations, let us know. We always want to help make the experience better for everyone.

Your participation also has a direct impact on your builder’s reputation. We use the results of this survey to determine finalists and recipients of the only awards in the province that recognize builders solely on the basis of their customer service. As we say, it’s the only builder award that is earned not won. If a builder becomes a finalist or recipient of this award, it will be added to their official record on the Ontario Builder Directory, available at Tarion.com. For anyone researching a new home builder, this is great way to find out how their customers feel about them.
